What you're paying for
Silt itself — the writing space, the reader, on-device search — is free and always works offline. The $3/month plan pays for the cloud infrastructure that stores your encrypted backup and keeps your devices in sync. It is a recurring subscription, not a one-time purchase.
What we can see
When you enable hosting and set a passphrase, your documents, highlights and books are encrypted on your device before they are uploaded. The server stores only ciphertext — we cannot read your content, and a lost passphrase cannot be recovered by anyone, including us.
